How BMI works

BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. It gives a quick snapshot of whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height.

We offer two standards: the WHO global standard (used worldwide) and the Asian-adjusted standard (recommended for people of East and South Asian descent, who tend to have higher health risks at lower BMI values).

BMI limitations

BMI is a useful screening tool but it has real limitations. It doesn't account for muscle mass (athletes often have high BMI but low body fat), age, gender, or where fat is distributed in the body. Use it as one data point, not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations happen instantly in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server, stored, or shared.

Why are there two BMI standards?

Research shows that people of East and South Asian descent face higher health risks (such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease) at lower BMI values than other populations. The Asian-adjusted standard reflects this.

What should I do if my BMI is outside the healthy range?

BMI is a starting point for conversation, not a verdict. If you have concerns, speak with a healthcare professional who can look at your full picture — not just a number.
