How your calorie needs are calculated
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation — the most widely validated formula for estimating Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor to give your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). Your daily calorie target is TDEE adjusted for your chosen goal.
Frequently asked questions
Is my data stored?
No. All calculations happen in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
Why do I need to enter my biological sex?
The Mifflin-St Jeor formula uses biological sex because average metabolic rates differ between male and female physiology. If you prefer not to specify, we use an average of the two values.
How accurate is this?
The formula gives a good estimate for most people. Individual metabolism varies, so treat this as a starting point and adjust based on how your body actually responds over 2–4 weeks.
What does −500 kcal per day actually mean in practice?
A consistent deficit of 500 kcal per day typically leads to approximately 0.5 kg (1 lb) of weight loss per week. This is considered a safe, sustainable rate for most people.
